The Path of Transformation in our Time: Jewish, Christian and Sufi texts for contemplation, study and action

We will explore the states of despair and “unknowing” that emerge in and from the darkness, especially in St. John of the Cross, the Zohar, Sufi texts as well as 20th century Hasidic Rebbes.

The Path of Transformation in our Time: Jewish, Christian and Sufi texts for contemplation, study and action

Matthew Fox has created a model of the “four fold” path that moves from the Via Positiva to Negativa, Creativa and Transformativa , essentially a way to move from a psycho spiritual dark night of the soul to a transformative experience. In our class we will explore how mystical experience of Darkness (primarily in Jewish, Christian and Sufi texts) moves us to a position of creativity, empowerment and working for healing and transformation. This class works well with the classic themes of the Jewish Holy Days, and its emphasis on the deep inner work of prayer and “turning” . We will explore the states of despair and “unknowing” that emerge in and from the darkness, especially in St. John of the Cross, the Zohar, Sufi texts as well as 20th century Hasidic Rebbes. How might we utilize the dialectic of the inner work of the soul journey with the external working for justice and Tikkun? In these dark times of the soul, of society and the planet ( to echo Matthew Fox’s description) how might we plumb the depths of the great religious teachings to create and renew our own and our collective spiritual path? Join Rabbi Jonathan and guests to explore these and related questions in 4 parts.
