Rabbi Heschel advised that we should not just talk about "the dark night of the soul" but of "the dark night of society." I have extended that to the dark night of democracy and the dark night of Mother Earth. What do the mystics teach about the dark night and what it has to teach us? About how to navigate it with our souls intact as both lovers (mystics) and prophets (activists and warriors)? How might such wisdom from the mystics imbue us--and especially the young--to be ever deeper lovers and defenders of what we cherish?
Rev. Matthew Fox (born December 21, 1940) is an internationally acclaimed American spiritiual theologian, Episcopal priest, and former Dominican friar. He is the founder of "Creation Spirituality," a progressive, earth-centered theological movement that integrates Judeo-Christian mysticism with modern science, eco-justice, and gender equality. He is the author of many impactful books over the last 50 years.
